Salvete LJCL sponsors,

We hope that you are taking time to enjoy this holiday season amidst the flurry of exam-writing, grading, gift-shopping, traveling, etc.  And we sincerely thank you for your hard work and dedication.  As convention approaches, we hope to facilitate your job as best we can.

The 2012 LJCL convention will be held from March 2-4.  Registration for convention will be due Saturday, January 21, 2012.  No registrations or refunds will be given after Saturday, February 4, 2012. Many forms have been updated, so please read them carefully.  One change regards student levels.  Level 1/2 should only designate middle school students who are enrolled in the first year of a two year Latin or Greek program.  Students enrolled in a classical humanities course should select Latin Level I.  Another change regards candidates for state office.  Please go over the list of responsibilities with possible candidates, and talk to them about their summer plans and the importance of attending National Convention.  If you have any questions about new or old forms, let us know.

In addition to sending in all forms by mail, we would really appreciate it if sponsors registered their students using the new and improved Google form.  Please go to the website below and carefully fill out the form for each student using their completed individual entry form.  You can also direct your SCLers to the second website below. We hope that these improvements will streamline the registration process and benefit all future state chairs.  Thanks to those of you who supported this addition last year!

The 2012 Convention will again be held at the Baton Rouge Marriott located at 5500 Hilton Avenue off of Corporate Blvd.  We thought that last year's convention ran very smoothly, and the staff was wonderful.  In an effort to create more social space for the students, we have added a game room and movie room on the second floor which will be open Friday night, Saturday late morning, and Saturday night.  Chaperones can sign up to monitor these rooms, and students are encouraged to bring appropriate games and movies.  We will also provide more outdoor time through LJCL's inaugural Ludi events, kickball and ultimate frisbee.  These will take place late Friday afternoon in the field across from the hotel lobby.  Students must have a medical form in order to participate.

All forms and links can be found in the State Convention section of the website, which will be updated over the coming days and weeks. Forthcoming mailings will include Latin Oratory passages, Drama selections, and an application for the NJCL Packet Award.  If you have any questions please let us know how we can help you!

Fall Forum 2011

While fall brings cold weather and changing leaves, it also brings Fall Forum! This year Fall Forum will be on October 29th at Baton Rouge Magnet High School ( 1105 Lee Drive. Baton Rouge, LA 70808.) Registration will begin at 12:45 and GA 1 will start at 1 pm. Like in past years, we will be hosting a can food drive for the Baton Rouge Food Bank. In addition this year we will have a can sculpture contest. The more cans that the students bring, the more cans you will have to create your masterpiece. Also for every three cans that a student brings, they will receive a raffle ticket for the door prizes handed out at the end of the event. Please see the flyer on the Fall Forum Page for more information. You can find the Fall Forum page here.

Salvete LJCL 2011-2012 Sponsors

Salvete LJCL Sponsors:

We hope that you and your students had a smooth and promising start to the school year, and that you are looking forward to starting your JCL chapter!  Included in this mailing is this year’s LJCL membership form.

  • In accordance with the NJCL Constitution, please be sure that all members are taking or have taken a classical language or a course in the classical humanities.
  • State dues are $11 per student but will increase to $12 after the October 31 deadline.
  • National dues are $2 per student.
  • Only chapters submitting membership after November 22 will have to pay the $10 national chapter fee, and a $20.00 fee will apply to membership submitted after March 22.  These dates are earlier than NJCL's deadlines in order in order to give us enough time to process your membership and forward national dues to NJCL.  If you are paying dues directly to NJCL, the due dates are December 1 and April 1.
  • If you plan to pay national dues directly to NJCL, please note that you must pay state dues to LJCL in order to be considered a member in good standing of NJCL and to be eligible for membership benefits such as the National Latin Honor Society.

The Louisiana delegation had an amazing trip to National Convention at Eastern Kentucky University!  We learned that the new theme for 2011-2012 is a quote from Horace: dimidium facti qui coepit habet—he who has begun has the work half done. We would also like to congratulate Kurt Ristroph from Catholic High, National Editor, and Dennis Webb from Shreveport, National Constitutional Advisor (a 5-year term).

This year’s state convention will be held from March 2-4 at the Marriott in Baton Rouge.  We have important and exciting new ideas for convention that will be discussed at Fall Forum. This year’s Fall Forum will be held on Saturday, October 29 at Baton Rouge Magnet High School (at the former Lee High) from 1-4:30. Registration begins at 12:45.  We encourage all chapters to bring members.  It is a great opportunity to meet new people, participate in fun activities (with prizes!), attend interesting workshops, and turn in your chapter membership without postal fees (especially since the due date is October 31)!  More information will be provided in the coming weeks.

If you will be new to LJCL this year, please do not hesitate to contact us before Fall Forum.  We would love to send officers your way to introduce you to LJCL procedures and recruit members.  To all new and old sponsors:  we cannot thank you enough for your hard work, without which our students would not be so fired up over "dead" languages. We look forward to seeing you at Fall Forum!  Please let us know if you would like to be removed from this list or if you have names to add to the list.
